General Information
Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) is indicated for the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems. This may also be used to treat heart failure. This medication is not recommended for use in children younger than 1 year. It is due to an increased risk of side effects.
How does Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) work?
Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) works by widening the blood vessels so that the heart does not have to pump as hard to move the blood around the body. This also means that when you put more demands on your heart, the heart may manage it better so you may not get short of breath as easily.
In hypertension, Atacand (Candesartan Cilexetil) causes a dose-dependent and long-lasting reduction in arterial blood pressure. The antihypertensive action is due to decreased systemic peripheral resistance, stroke volume, while heart rate and cardiac output are not affected. There is no indication of serious or exaggerated first dose hypotension or rebound effect after cessation of treatment.
