Where is Torsemide used?

Torsemide is used to reduce extra fluid in the body. This type of condition is called edema which is caused by conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease. This can lessen symptoms like shortness of breath and swelling in your legs, arms, and abdomen.

This medication may also use to treat hypertension or also known as high blood pressure.

Torsemide is in a class of drugs known as loop diuretics. This is potent or known as a water pill. This drug is available for oral administration. In the year 1993, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved this medication.

How does Torsemide work?

Torsemide causes a profound increase in urine output (diuresis) by preventing the kidney from retaining water. Specifically, it blocks the reabsorption back into the blood of sodium and water that has been filtered out of the blood in the kidneys. The potent diuretic effect of this medication can cause the loss of large amounts of body water leading to dehydration. Also, the losses of electrolytes like magnesium, potassium, sodium, and calcium.

How is Torsemide taken?

The recommended dosage for this depends on your medical condition and response.

You may take it with or without food. This medication is usually taken once a day. Take it at the same time each day and use it regularly. Do not stop taking these tablets without consulting your doctor. Follow your doctor’s prescription carefully.

To get the most benefit, take this medication regularly. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day as directed. Keep taking this medicine even if you feel well. Usually, it may take 4 to 6 weeks, or up to 12 weeks, before the full blood pressure-lowering effect is seen. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor.

If you also take certain medications to lower your cholesterol, take this medicine at least 1 hour before or at least 4 to 6 hours after these medications. Let your doctor know if your condition does not improve or if it gets worse. If you are taking this medicine to control high blood pressure, inform your doctor if your blood pressure readings remain high.
